GI conditions
Delivering for patients with GI conditions
At Takeda, we are guided by our steadfast commitment to put the patient first in everything we do. In support of the gastrointestinal (GI) community, we support several programmes dedicated to education and awareness to ensure people living with GI conditions receive the care and support they need. This includes:
"In My Shoes" app created in partnership with Crohn’s and Colitis UK
"500,000 Reasons Why" campaign working with the community to raise awareness around the need for more consistent care for IBD patients across the UK
Our ACTIVATE programme to support professional development of early career doctors and pharmacists
IBD Empower to support professional development of nurses in their delivery of high quality care.
In My Shoes App
As part of our work to raise awareness of IBD, we partnered with Crohn’s and Colitis UK to develop an immersive app titled “In My Shoes”. The app allows anyone to experience over 24 hours what it’s like to live with Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis – the main two forms of IBD. From depleting energy levels to managing pain, from rushing to the toilet to juggling work and a social life, the app enables people to see first- hand how the condition can affect everyday life.
500,000 Reasons Why campaign
As things stand, patients with long-term conditions receive varying standards of care from diagnosis through to treatment based on where they live. For those living with IBD, this variation across the patient pathway affects how long they wait to receive care, whether they have access to the right services, the quality of care they receive, and the quality of life they have.
We believe there is an urgent need to level the playing field for those living with a long-term condition, such as IBD. That is why we launched the 500,000 Reasons Why campaign to raise awareness for the need for more consistent care for IBD patients across the UK; ensuring national standards are implemented across the health system to have a positive effect on IBD care and patient quality of life.
As part of the campaign, Takeda hosted two roundtable events, published regional infographics detailing the standards of care across England, supported World IBD Day and launched two reports exploring key issues for people living with IBD:
- The Economic Cost of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the UK, which looked to demonstrate the urgent need for the greater prioritisation of IBD by the Government and health services, presenting the full socioeconomic impact of IBD – beyond just the health service and delving into its impact on patients’ lives and on the economy.
- ‘Levelling up care for people living with inflammatory bowel disease: A spotlight on Service Exemplars’, which gathered testimony from clinicians on some examples of best practice from across the UK that may serve as learnings for IBD services nationally.

IBD Empower
IBD Empower is an award-winning innovative, multi-channel education programme, for nurses by nurses, to support the professional growth of the IBD nursing community and improve patient care. This programme is delivered in two ways, through: live training sessions and an e-learning portal. Through these different learning styles, information is delivered in ways to support IBD CNS by furthering their skills and strengthening IBD patient care. Since being launched in October 2020, IBD Empower has already engaged with over 190 IBD CNS, many interacting with two or more channels, creating a blended learning experience. Through this, IBD Empower shows Takeda’s commitment to GI to provide support and create confidence with IBD nurses, allowing for greater patient care.
